Studio of Books proudly showcased Robert Tolbert’s book, “Preservation of the Union”, at the prestigious 2024 Frankfurt International Book Fair, held from October 16 to 20 in Frankfurt, Germany.
The Frankfurt Book Fair provided an opportunity for outstanding books to shine this year. Both readers and publishing industry leaders were drawn to these pieces because of their compelling themes and distinctive viewpoints. They prompted discussions, inspired new perspectives, and served as a reminder of the broad appeal of storytelling.
“Preservation of the Union” by Robert Tolbert explores the deep historical roots of America, tracing the author’s ancestry back to the late 17th century when his first ancestor arrived in Virginia. This book covers the author’s family’s journey through colonial times, the rise of slavery, and the formation of key political relationships, including connections to prominent figures like Thomas Jefferson. Tolbert examines the long-lasting consequences of slavery, particularly in the South, and its impact on the nation’s history.
The book delves into the personal history of the Tolbert family, highlighting the Phoenix Riot of 1898, a tragic event in which members of the Tolbert family were injured, and their battle for voting rights during a time of racial oppression. The author discusses the deep racial tensions and systemic injustices that have plagued America, using his family’s story as a lens through which to understand broader societal issues.
In addition to chronicling the painful history of slavery and racial inequality, Tolbert calls for a more open, honest discussion about race and encourages readers to move beyond divisive rhetoric to work towards healing and unity. He reflects on how America can preserve its union by confronting the mistakes of the past and forging a path forward that transcends racial divisions.
The book also serves as a personal and historical reflection on the fight for civil rights, from the Phoenix Riot to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and ends with a hopeful call to action for individuals to explore difficult issues in order to preserve the union and the future of humanity.
